G28 is scheduled for pavement overlay in 2020. This section of road is designated as part of two cross country trails, true American Discovery Trail and the Great American Rails to Trails trail. This great for Muscatine!
These trails are already over 50% complete using existing trails and filling gaps. Trail use is exploding. This will continue with the advent of Ebikes. Trails are used when they are convenient, safe and connect municipalities.
We have suffered two tragic bicycle fatalities recently.
There is a big problem with the proposed design of G28. Only 2 feet of paved shoulder is allowed for. That is totally inadequate for safety for the shared road that this will be with the cross country trails coming through. Johnson county has allowed 5 and 6 foot paved shoulders on their recent projects. We need to do the same. It’s not too late but the is urgent. Let’s do this right the first time. It’s cheaper that way, it will save lives and enhance Muscatine county!
